Feedback exp 2

The intention of publishing the feedback below is so that all students can benefit by understanding the strengths and weakness’ of a range of projects. Please take the time to review other students work with these comments in mind. If you have any questions or would like any further clarification don’t hesitate to ask me during the studio session.

Philip Adams
Key strength of the scheme: Generally well put together particularly the overall composition.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Only two quotes. An enormous amount of circulation space that doesn’t really contribute to the spatial experience.

Nissa Bettess
Key strength of the scheme: Size, colour and lighting evocative and well considered.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Idea of normality is fascinating. Not really clear how you are exploring this idea. What is your take on normal/ abnormal? Is what you are saying that architecture is made up of walls, floors and roofs?

Will Carthey
Key strength of the scheme: Idea of interconnectedness and its relationship to the quote is good.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Lack of exploration of your ideas. You don’t only need to express the idea you need to consider how you can make them significant. You should be asking yourself if your interpretation of the idea is interesting, rich, exciting and well put together and if this is appropriate to your idea.

Angus Chu
Key strength of the scheme: Generally carefully put together and well considered
Most significant weakness of the scheme: The materiality and lighting is very controlled but does not make your project sing. Try experimenting with lighting and materials so that they contribute to the space. Create highlights, darkness, mystery, uniformity.............whatever suits your idea.

Cherry Fan
Key strength of the scheme: A couple of your image captures are well done. Good manipulation of the datum. Ramp visually exciting.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Some scale problems. Some things don’t fit together well.

Leila Hargreaves
Key strength of the scheme: The central space with the stairway is very powerful.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: You really explored your textures which I appreciate however some spaces are over textured which detracts from the space.

Lin Huang
Key strength of the scheme: Strong image captures and some very interesting spaces and compositions
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Why can’t I get into the lighthouse? Do you really understand what you have written in sentence starting with: The meeting room..........?

Pamela Jia
Key strength of the scheme: The chain like composition of spaces is interesting.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Some of textures not saved properly. You have hallway type spaces that don’t go anywhere. You need to consider how elements, including materials, join together.

Lawrence Kim
Key strength of the scheme: The careful cut into wall which articulates the whole composition is well done. The internal space is compositionally quite good as is the ramp with flat panels.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: The objects and spaces within the ‘frame’ (cut out in wall) could have been visually stronger objects and stronger spaces too. You would need to add some detail and try not to apply too much texture. Window in yellow ‘look out’ space too high.

Peter Kim
Key strength of the scheme: The thought process behind your design and the internal space.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: You need to sometimes explore different ways of expressing the idea. The spatial experience of the meeting and outdoor space is not as interesting as the internal space. You could also explore lighting more.

Lisa Li
Key strength of the scheme: Spaces well considered and appropriately scaled.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: You have used a lot of texture which sometimes overwhelms the space.

Fiona Luo
Key strength of the scheme: Overall structure of sequencing, portals and composition.

Most significant weakness of the scheme: A lot of texture which doesn’t contribute to your ideas. Get rid of guns and tools in image captures please.

Bree Miller
Key strength of the scheme: Good interlocking spaces. Some of the image captures show the spaces off well.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Lack of detail and proof of understanding space and scale. How things join is sometimes clumsy. If a secondary space is to be contrasted with main space the size and proportions of the second space will need to be significantly different.

Sean Niu
Key strength of the scheme: Composition in wall great. Interesting experiences and spaces. Good image captures. Good control of colour and atmosphere.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Some scale and fit issues such as stairs that don’t join/ fit well.

Jenny Qu
Key strength of the scheme: Some spaces exceptional. Blue/ sky room is interesting as is wire cage for Alfred Nobel.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: A little over textured sometimes. Get rid of guns etc. in images. Ramps are dangerous. Is that intentional?

Edward Sarafian
Key strength of the scheme: Image captures strong. Materials well considered.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Need to think about the hierarchy of spaces and potential use. Currently much of your design seems like left over space.

Jono Tat
Key strength of the scheme: Internal space well done. Good mix of detail and well scaled space.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Outdoor space less successful. Feels more like circulation space rather than a place to stay. A little more detail would have helped. In general when doing such simple spaces everything needs to be just right. Be critical of surfaces that do or don’t align and materials consider material transitions.

Alison Ward
Key strength of the scheme: External space well done. The use of all the layers as a compositional structure works well as does the choice of colours.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Ramps not integral part of design. Most image captures are overall images and can never be experienced when walking around. Be careful how things meet. Hierarchy of space needs work. What are the important spaces or are they all of equal value?

Jamie Yoo
Key strength of the scheme: Textures well done.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Elements appear oversized. Overall image captures suggest the spaces will be more interesting than they are. Things sometimes don’t fit well together. You need more detail.

Ruben Zhao
Key strength of the scheme: Some amazing imposing space. One or two of image captures excellent.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Some spaces over textured. Looks a bit too much like a computer game. Consider resolving geometry of items that you copy several times in you spaces. Try and explore more with lighting and be careful how things join together.

Comments experiment 1

The intention of publishing the feedback below is so that all students can benefit by understanding the strengths and weakness’ of a range of projects. Please take the time to review other students work with these comments in mind. If you have any questions or would like any further clarification don’t hesitate to ask me during the studio session.

Adams Philip
Key strength of the scheme: Good exploration of geometry underground and datum
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Clashing of objects and way things meet. First proposal which was very similar was more considered in this respect.

Bettess Nissa
Key strength of the scheme: Almost industrial aesthetic with integrated embossed like connecting pieces are fascinating.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: The careful siting of the scheme and manipulation of the datum could have really contributed to your design.

Carthey Will
Key strength of the scheme: Delightful complexity of upper space and ‘golden’ glow of space underground
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Resolution of underground space. Options to develop could have included colouring and shaping floor. Need to work on crafting sketches more carefully.

Chu Angus
Key strength of the scheme: Very consistent use of geometry both internally and externally.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Floor area enormous which means you should have considered the vertical dimension to create more spatial interest.

Fan Cherry
Key strength of the scheme: Internal spaces well done in particular ‘platform’ stair
Most significant weakness of the scheme: External appearance quite simplistic. This is only ok if composition considered very carefully.

Hargreaves Leila
Key strength of the scheme: Translation from sketch into 3d space is very well done. Underground space exciting.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Needs more resolution to convince that spaces really work.

Huang Lin
Key strength of the scheme: Great glass ball ‘landscape’ which also allows light into water under datum.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Three dimensional resolution of ‘aquarium’ under datum space.

Jia Pamela
Key strength of the scheme: Strange and interesting composition of iconic objects.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: No manipulation or evidence of considering datum.

Kim Lawrence
Key strength of the scheme: Spaces within spaces and the connections between the secondary spaces (boxes) make it spatially exciting.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: The datum appears to not have been considered in design.

Kim Peter
Key strength of the scheme: Excellent scale, resolution, coherency and detail of space above ground
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Difficult to get good idea of what is going on in underground space from images presented. Could have considered datum a little more.

Li Lisa
Key strength of the scheme: General spatial composition has interest.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: 95% of interesting underground work you did can not be experienced.

Luo Fiona
Key strength of the scheme: The beauty and simplicity of the scheme one week before submission
Most significant weakness of the scheme: The development of your scheme during the last week. Resolving the spaces doesn’t simply mean adding more shape. It can mean solving how things actually would be if constructed.

Miller Bree
Key strength of the scheme: Spaces and integration of stairs is very good. (A little more detail could have made it even better)
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Underground spaces not presented well in animations.

Niu Sean
Key strength of the scheme: Underground space looks exciting. Good interpretation of section.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: You used a lot of dark texture making it difficult to understand the spaces.

Qu Jenny
Key strength of the scheme: Top space strong, sculptural monumental space
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Need to move beyond simple extruding a main shape.

Sarafian Edward
Key strength of the scheme: Transformation of top section into 3D clear and well interpreted.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Underground spaces needed more work. Charles Moffat was not one of the clients.

Tat Jono
Key strength of the scheme: Scale and manipulation of ‘rolling’ floor, datum and sketches are good.
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Materiality (texture) and the way the roof sits on the scheme.

Ward Alison
Key strength of the scheme: Simple poetic above ground structure
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Try shading sketches with more care and think about transitions from inside to outside.

Yoo Jamie
Key strength of the scheme: Spatial experience of top space
Most significant weakness of the scheme: Scale of stair and the fact that spaces are the result of simply extruding a two dimensional shape.

Zhao Ruben
Key strength of the scheme: Clarity and monumentality of design
Most significant weakness of the scheme: The internal spaces are very basic with little detail or spatial interest.
